Tier-skipping hyphenate Sheila Houlahan gets real with author and Emmy-honored casting director Bonnie Gillespie about mental health, enoughness, and the inner work of being a storytelling activist.
Here’s the chat from our live session!
What are your key takeaways from Sheila’s interview from the SMFA Summit? Share below in the comments! 🙂
Sheila Houlahan is an actor, producer, writer, and vocal coach with a penchant for a good roundhouse kick. She’s known for her work opposite Denzel Washington in John Lee Hancock’s film The Little Things, a Warner Bros. film that made waves during the pandemic and ended up being the highest grossing R-rated film during quarantine. Her other credits include a series regular role on Amazon Prime’s The Scottish Play, a leading role in Lionsgate’s cult horror film Beloved Beast, and a supporting role in Paradigm Studio’s feature film Wallflower, hailed by Variety as “one of the most haunting films of 2019.” Sheila is currently producing a hybrid feature film for Twitch featuring award-winning actress Ellen McClain, Oscar-nominated cinematographer Trevor Roach, and John Lowrie as director. When she isn’t kicking ass as a multi-hyphenate, she coaches actors on singing and speech, passionate about helping every human find their soul-connection to their authentic voice.

Thank you for all the amazing insights & vulnerability!
Definitely gonna check out the DBT stuff.
Main takeaways:
“My feelings aren’t eternal” <– was big for me when I figured this out too, but also, good to be reminded cuz I still forget sometimes!
"Figuring out your enoughness will help your True North define itself for you." <–LOVE. I, too, struggle with the idea of naming my True North (what if it's wrong? what if it changes? blah, blah) and I can totally see how this is actually an indication of low enoughness. Trusting that as I continue my enoughness journey, the True North will come clear (and evolve more easily) is extremely useful to my analytic brain.
Also, based on other talks this year, I believe my word for the 2nd half of 2021 will be BURRITO.
Also – can’t wait for your offering! I adore breathwork as a tool for acting, activism, and enoughness!
Thank you. I really needed to hear this today. DBT sounds amazing
