Once upon a time, I was interviewed about how I became “debossified.” Sterling Valentine hosts this podcasts in which he chats with folks who’ve built their own businesses and this is his sit-down with me.
You’ll hear me talk about early leadership, surviving a bully boss, dispassionate labeling, golden handcuffs vs. cobbling together crap jobs to finance the passion, walking toward where the buyers value you, and being a Big Ol’ 5… long before we had gathered here for Get in Gear for the Next Tier.
Enjoy this shot in the arm for staying on-track with “your happy,” no matter how that looks to the rest of the world.
AHHH That quote! “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” I am in love. I am making a pretty thing and posting it to Insta.
Also, as I am currently trying to figure out my own person income strategy and considering everything from multiple part time jobs, to a single full time job, to even the most ridiculous and unlikely of options, it was a nice reminder to hear about the golden handcuffs and how that can affect your hustle. I was starting to settle into the idea of a single full time job and prove myself invaluable to them, then take the time off when I need it for acting gigs when it comes up, but I want to re-evaluate that with the golden handcuffs mindset. I’m not sure if that would help or hurt my own personal hustle, so I am excited to re-analyze the options coming from a place of “How could this affect the ultimate hustle and the real work I want to do down here?”
Lots to ponder!
Thank you Bonnie!
You’re welcome! And you won’t know for sure how it’s gonna affect your hustle ’til you’re in it, I’m afraid. It’s like Sterling said about Steve Jobs’ quote on progress/achievement and when we can know it has happened. So maybe in addition to asking how it will or might affect your ultimate hustle, also do a “criteria list” of some sort (like a NO line list) of what a job needs to have in order to be of enough value that you’ll RISK it cutting into your hustle.
Excited to learn how this goes for you!!
Oh, and *I KNOW* on the Howard Thurman quote! It’s actually the opening quote of the 4th edition of Self-Management for Actors. 😉 That’s how much I love it. Glad you do too.
