Thanks for this, Bonnie.
I have a voice-over audition today and it was just what I needed to hear. It helped relax me…
Oh, I’m so glad, Randy! 🙂
The results oriented questions from friends and family is always tough to deal with and I can have a hard time answering the right way. Even when I talk about auditions I’ve had, sometimes theres this immediate expectation that I booked it because of course it’s that easy, like it was my decision. I don’t feel the need to explain myself or please anybody, but thinking about how I can reframe those questions can help the situation. I remember someone asking that question and I tried explaining other things I’m doing like the class I’m taking and how I’m collaborating with other actors and we’re writing and creating our own material. We’re gonna shoot it for our YouTube channel and create Instagram shorts. I’m targeting different agents by doing research, setting up my Self-Taping space and I’m getting new awesome headshots that I won at a showcase my class put together for free.
None of this registered or resonated with this person as they just looked confused and uninterested and it left me feeling like I wasn’t doing anything worthwhile, like I had accomplished nothing. I realized that none of that is personal, but I like the way you said Bonnie about there’s a lot of work we do where we do not get paid, sometimes for quite a long time and relating that back to something like a Real Estate Agent. But, that first job, what you get paid hourly plus residuals etc. can make someone see the benefits of what your doing. And if they can’t get on board after that, then it’s not worth trying to explain your process and it’s not something I should be stressing over.
Woo HOO! *standing on my chair clapping and cheering* Yes, Joey! Yes! So well-stated! Right ON! Set a NO line with this. Like: “I’ll explain to this point. Once I’ve explained to this point and they’re still not getting it, we’re done. No more explaining. Just put ’em in the ‘they’re not gonna get it’ category and spend our time together talking about anything else.”
Thanks Bonnie! The NO line is really important for me on this because I absolutely never want to feel like that again, like I’m just wasting my time on everything I’m putting effort and work into. I never believe that, but it’s that initial feeling that someone can give you even if it’s unintentional and that really sucks.
Absolutely. And the “what sucks” of it is really knowing at your core that you’ve given away that much power over your own happiness. Ugh. Never again, indeed!
